FBR Returns Filing Guide

A step-by-step guide for SoftSunrise clients — activate your NTN, understand your tax invoices, and file your FBR returns without an accountant.

Get Your NTN & Activate It

Your NTN (National Tax Number) is your tax identity with the Federal Board of Revenue. If you do not have one yet:

  1. Visit iris.fbr.gov.pk and click New User Registration.
  2. Select your registration type — Individual or AOP / Company.
  3. Enter your CNIC (Computerised National Identity Card) and mobile number.
  4. An OTP is sent to your mobile — verify it and complete the registration form.
  5. Your NTN is issued immediately after approval (usually within 1–2 working days).
  6. For a quick alternative, visit any FBR Regional Tax Office or a registered tax practitioner in your city.

Activate Your Sales Tax Profile

If you need to charge Sales Tax (GST) on your invoices — for example 18% on software services for businesses — your NTN must have sales tax registration activated:

  1. Log in to IRIS with your NTN and password.
  2. Go to Registrations → Sales Tax Registration.
  3. Submit the application with your business details (name, address, bank account, activity).
  4. Once approved, you receive a Sales Tax Registration Number (STRN).
  5. Now your sale invoices can show Sales Tax, and your purchase invoices give you input tax credits.

Not sure whether you fall under the threshold? SoftSunrise invoices only include tax when applicable — ask us and we will point you in the right direction.

Understand Your SoftSunrise Invoice

Every SoftSunrise invoice you receive contains everything needed for your FBR record:

Invoice #
A unique serial number on every invoice for easy reference and filing.
Seller & Buyer Details
SoftSunrise name, address and NTN/CNIC, plus your business name and NTN/CNIC.
Tax Breakdown
Subtotal, tax percentage, tax amount and total — so you can claim input tax if registered.
Invoice Date
The issue date, which decides which return period the invoice falls into.
Keep every invoice

Save your invoices (PDF copies are available via the print option). FBR may require purchase invoices to verify expenses and input tax claims.

File Your Returns on IRIS

Returns are filed online at iris.fbr.gov.pk. Which return applies to you depends on whether you are income-tax registered, sales-tax registered, or both:

Sales Tax Return
Monthly (or quarterly for retailers) — the ST File form on IRIS lists your sales, purchases, output tax and input tax.
Deadline: 18th of the following month.
Income Tax Return
Annual — the IT File form summarizes your yearly income, expenses and tax already deducted or paid.
Deadline: usually 30 September of the following year.
  1. Log in to IRIS with your NTN.
  2. Open Returns and select the applicable return (e.g. ST File or IT File).
  3. Fill the fields — IRIS pre-fills many sections (income, tax, banking transactions).
  4. Add your sales and purchases figures from your invoice summaries.
  5. Review, submit, and download the acknowledgment receipt for your records.

Pay Any Tax Due

If your return shows tax payable, pay it through IRIS using any of these channels before the deadline:

Online Banking
Pay directly from most Pakistani bank portals using the PSID generated in IRIS.
Mobile Wallet
JazzCash / Easypaisa bill-payment option using your PSID.
Bank Over-the-Counter
Take the generated PSID to any authorized bank branch (HBL, Meezan, UBL, etc.).
